As a young boy, Martin wore a tie to his first day of kindergarten. Since then, he has given new meaning to the concept “I love school”. When not dreaming up ways to build more school spirit, Martin enjoys shoe shopping and generally projecting his unique sense of zen & positivity. While living in Seoul, Martin refined his taste for kimchi and live octopus; since his return to the land of mountains and green, he has: imported a lovely German girl, tried unsuccessfully to count a November’s worth of raindrops and tumbled head-first down numerous Blackcomb slopes. He brings this spirit of adventure and unfailing optimism to the LSS, with the objective of making each and every law student smile at least once a week.

Sara Hopkins is a former National Sprint Kayaking Team athlete, and prior to studying law at UBC was a high school teacher and kayak coach.  She completed an English Honours degree at UVic, an Education degree at SFU and completed her graduate work at Saint Mary’s University. In her first two years at UBC Sara volunteered with the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program, the Legal Exposure Outreach group, and was involved with the Law Students’ Society (LSS) as both a First-year Representative and Ombudsperson. Sara was the 2010-2011 Student Coordinator for Pro Bono Students Canada, participated in a Public Interest Fellowship in Belize and working on several faculty projects, including the Strategic Planning Committee. This summer, Sara is working with the Penticton & Area Women’s Centre as part of the UBC Law Public Interest Placement program. Sara is also proud to be representing UBC Law students as the LSS Vice-President, Academic Issues for 2011-12.

After defeating the Bugs as a Roughneck and returning from Klendathu, Adam set his sights on more Earthly pursuits. He assisted in making Jurassic Park a reality by studying cell biology at McGill University and offering his services to the billionaire John Hammond. Following the unfortunate events that transpired on Isla Nublar, he shifted his career away from invoking nature’s fury to focus on more reasonable ventures. He now resides as a UBC law student and spends his spare time retrofitting

Deloreans to use the metric system – however converting from 1.21 jiggawatts has proven elusive thus far.

Otherwise, he spends his time laughing at other people, building Excel spreadsheets of celebrity drug habits, and spreading love in the form of prolonged and tender hugs. Apart from owning a stable of demonic pets as a level 91 destruction warlock, his interests include antihistamines, magnets, and hissing matches with startled raccoons. He hopes to use his law degree to make campy local TV commercials asking if you’ve been injured by any of your tupperware.

Roni Jones is a recovering engineer. After an arduous barefoot journey from Toronto where he learned about life, love, and the true meaning of friendship, he now finds himself disabused of all those ideas and bitter at the arbitrary cruelty of the universe. He interests include puppies, ice cream, and uncomfortably long hugs. He once ate a whole birthday cake even though it wasn’t his birthday. While certain judicial orders prevent him from officially owning pets, on Thursdays he feeds his neighbour’s parrot Eduardo (who speaks only in whispers). He should not be trusted with money.

Prior to law school, Shannon did a major in communications at SFU and attended class as infrequently as possible. She spent the majority of her spare time watching Sponge Bob Square Pants reruns which explains her general weirdness and love of pineapples. Aside from watching cartoons, she competed as a three-day-eventer with her horse Norman. Shannon is generally a terrible influence on everyone around her, and looks forward to alerting you to all the fun times that will be had in the new law building.

In addition to being a member of the LSS Exec and the Academic Issues Council, Eric is the law school’s representative on board of the main UBC student government.  This roughly translates to a free dinner twice a month.  Having been a member of the AIC for the past two years, Eric provides a modicum of institutional memory, and continues to be an active voice for student issues within the faculty, in particular on the Building Steering Committee and on the Faculty Advisory Committee. His extensive experience combining academic furniture and napping has given him a strong background for his work with the committee selecting the furniture for the new building.

Having spent the first twenty-four of his twenty-seven years in Edmonton (and six of those at the U of A), Eric has spent the last two
years laughing at locals who complain about the weather.  While Eric may often be found politely debating any classmate with the misfortune to be born in Calgary, he’s actually a nice guy who’s happy to chat, either about academic concerns, current events, food, or alcoholic beverages.  His current favourite cocktail is the Don Draper at L’Abbatoir, but he harbours a fondness for anything involving Campari, and may also be bribed with discount codes for Threadless.*

For any concerns, questions, or valid expressions of your Charter s2(b) rights regarding the law school and the AMS, e-mail Eric at
ubclawamsrep@gmail.com

*No bribes, gifts, or donations will actually be accepted.”

Jeanette is your 2011/2012 Ombudsperson. Jeanette was born in the lovely town of Oshawa, raised in Canada’s suburb-on-steroids, Mississauga, and completed her undergraduate degree In Labour Relations, philosophy and history at the University of Toronto. This is her first year on the LSS, and is very eager to be your go-to-woman for just about any issue you might have.

Jeanette enjoys snowboarding, dance classes, ridiculous intramural events like Storm the Wall, a good night out

on the town, and eating pretty much anything, all the time. She also likes adventuring to random destinations like Greenland, where she staved off polar bears with her superpowers and was exposed to the pleasant scent of a fish jerky-based economy.

PS: Jeanette is still seeking the legal buddy of her dreams. Like everyone else, she enjoys long walks on the beach. Her zodiac sign is gemini, which apparently means she’s erratic, flaky, and basically nuts.Jeanette is excited to make sure your year runs satisfactorily, and is always welcome to having a good chat about anything.

Anthony Oliver spends most of the day dreaming of donning his black mask, cloak and being referred to as Batman. He entered law school upon realizing that serving as an Alberta Sheriff was not the most effective way to get justice done. While 1L afforded Anthony the opportunity to wear his black unitard, during the past summer with Alberta Justice, his batarang was sadly replaced with a legal pad.

Taking over as Director of Aboriginal and Academic Issues from Dave Peltier involves significant responsibility – not only effective advocacy for fellow Aboriginal law students, but also wearing shorts year round as “Métis

Dave” did for 3 years before commencing clerkship with the Federal Court.

You can expect big things from ILSA, AIC and the LSS through the 2011/2012 academic year!

Claire Haaf, an intrepid and enthusiastic 2L, managed—through a combination of luck and intimidation tactics—to be acclaimed as this year’s Director of Sports, Clubs, and Development. She’s really looking forward to liaising with cute team captains (sports), organizing Clubs Day and other awesome events (clubs), and charming firms into giving us more money for bzzr ups (development). She was previously a first-year social rep for the SAC.

Claire spent her formative years in the public schools of Surrey, BC, but likes to think she’s turned out to be a pretty nice girl

anyhow. Before law school, she studied English Literature and worked for a car insurance company. Claire has bad taste in music, loves costume parties, and is always happy to go for drinks on a school night.

Brendan Craig doesn’t believe in last names. Morally, that is–he knows they exist. He is a licensed “pleasure craft” operator, making him fully qualified to craft pleasure in every Canadian province and territory (except Quebec). Once a wizened old fortune teller revealed the day he was going to die, but not the date, so now he has to spend every Wednesday hiding under the porch. While he does play the

theremin, this affinity for disturbing Soviet-era electromagnetic music doesn’t reflect Communist sympathies–it’s strictly for the ladies. He does, however, have Communist sympathies. Brendan independently invented lacrosse and was disappointed to discover someone had come up with it first. As Senator, he is deeply committed to three-piece suits, gin, and yelling “THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!” Sometimes he has a beard.
